Legal Action Targets TUI After Gastric Illness Links to Six Cape Verde Deaths
A major legal investigation is underway following the deaths of six British tourists who fell ill during holidays in Cape Verde. Four of these fatalities occurred within a single four-month period in 2025, prompting families to pursue claims against travel giant TUI over alleged hygiene failures.
Recurring Health Issues Plague Island Resorts Since 2022
Health officials have monitored illness patterns in this West African region for several years, significant spikes in bacterial infections appeared in late 2022. The UK Health Security Agency previously linked a large percentage of Shigella sonnei cases to travel in this area, other European nations reported similar trends during that time. Government warnings advised tourists to avoid untreated water and eat only freshly cooked food, however, reports of sickness have persisted despite these early alerts.
Families Allege Fatal Neglect at Popular Hotel Chain
Lawyers at Irwin Mitchell now represent more than 1,500 holidaymakers who suffered severe gastric symptoms, the firm confirms it is acting on behalf of the families of the six deceased. Victims include 64-year-old Elena Walsh, she died of heart failure after contracting an infection at a Riu resort. Another victim, Mark Ashley, collapsed and died in the UK after falling violently ill days into his trip. The legal team argues that poor sanitation protocols at all-inclusive hotels directly caused these fatalities.
Karen Pooley faced severe delays in medical care after falling ill and fracturing her leg, she later died from sepsis and organ failure following an evacuation to Tenerife. TUI has denied liability in these cases, the operator suggests illness can result from various sources unrelated to their hotels. A spokesperson for Riu Hotels stated that regular internal testing has never detected harmful bacteria in their food or water supplies.
Tourists Face Medical Risks and Insurance Concerns
These tragedies highlight the limited medical infrastructure available on the islands, local hospitals often lack essential supplies and equipment. Travelers with pre-existing conditions face higher risks if emergency evacuation becomes necessary due to the remote location. Industry experts now warn that obtaining comprehensive travel insurance is vital for anyone visiting the region to cover potential medical flights.
Legal proceedings will likely continue for months as investigators gather evidence regarding safety standards. Officials urge current travelers to remain vigilant regarding food hygiene and water consumption while abroad.
